This unique book takes us on a journey through the lands of “Muhammad al-Makhzanjī”, using the language of a writer and the curiosity of a journalist. It depicts a series of investigative journeys across various countries, which, at the time it was published, represented a breakthrough in the world of Arab journalism. In this book, al-Makhzanjī explores both small and large countries, documenting the lives of their people and how historical and geographical factors have influenced them. Each region has developed its own unique culture, serving as a testament to humanity’s ability to coexist with others and with nature. While he also explores the political factors that pose challenges to these peoples at the time of his travels, he also reveals the resistance to racism in South Africa, as well as the smoke rising from the ruins of Bosnia after the war. What is most fascinating, however, is the broad perspective that al-Makhzanjī gained from his travels, which inspired him to title his book “South and East”. He explained this title as follows: There exists a spiritual philosophy, a vision that…They are kind and compassionate towards people and countries in the south and east. I have opened my eyes to capture these visions, as much as is possible and reasonable. I reflect on them in the mirror of my soul. These visions are perhaps the most distinctive features of these explorations, from a technical perspective, in terms of the text or writing of the journey. Therefore, these journeys and visions are hoped to be enjoyable and beneficial for those who read them. “Muhammad al-Makhzanjī” studied in Mansurah, and he taught medicine at his university. He specialized in psychiatry in Ukraine. After twelve years, he stopped working in the medical field and devoted himself to journalism. Now he is a editorial advisor for the Arab magazine in Cairo. He writes a weekly article for the newspaper Al-Sharq since its publication in 2009. Al-Makhzanjī has published seven books, including novels, a novel about Chernobyl, two books on children’s environmental literature, and an e-book on travel literature. In 2005, he won the Sawiris Prize for Best Story Writer.
