The novel explores Dostoevsky’s personal experience with gambling addiction. It provides a detailed psychological analysis of obsession, desire, and destructive impulses. The events take place in a fictional European city called Rolitenberg. The protagonist, Alexey Ivanovich, works as a private tutor for a dysfunctional Russian family that lives on the hope of inheriting some wealth. Alexey falls in love with Polina, a mysterious and unpredictable woman who exerts a kind of emotional control over him. Sometimes, she drives him to commit humiliating actions, taking advantage of his pathological attachment to her. In return, gambling becomes his only refuge. The roulette table becomes a place where he can indulge in illusions of power, freedom, and victory over fate. With each bet, Alexey oscillates between the joy of winning and the despair of losing, gradually losing control over himself. The novel reaches its climax when the old grandmother appears. Everyone had expected her to die so that they could inherit her fortune. But to their surprise, she also becomes addicted to gambling. In the same impulsive manner that destroys others, she loses her fortune. Through this paradox, Dostoevsky highlights the meaningless nature of attachments to money and luck. He portrays gambling as a spiritual disease that erodes a person’s dignity and willpower. This novel isn’t just a story about money; it’s a story about the enslavement of desire, and how a person becomes a prisoner of their passions when they lose their sense of purpose and internal balance.
