The novel “In the Underworld” was originally titled “Notes from Underground” in English. Sometimes it is translated as “Memoirs from Under the Earth” or “In the Underworld”. It is considered one of Dostoevsky’s most important works, and one of the most influential works in modern existentialism. The novel does not rely on a traditional plot structure. Instead, it presents a honest and emotionally intense confession from a man with an unknown name who lives in isolation in an underground world—a symbol of internal isolation and alienation from society. The first part consists of philosophical reflections in which the narrator criticizes rationalism, logic, and positivism, which were prevalent in his time. He refuses to be merely a being governed by the laws of nature or reality. He believes that true freedom lies in choosing to suffer and make mistakes, rather than submitting to strict rules. In the second part, the narrative shifts to describe the narrator’s daily life and his limited interactions with others. This includes his relationship with a woman named Lisa, which reveals the fragility of human psychology and the complexity of relationships. It’s a profound personal pain. This novel doesn’t present a linear narrative at all. Instead, it echoes an internal voice from a conscience burdened by psychological conflicts. It illustrates how self-awareness can transform from a source of strength into a heavy burden, leading the individual towards isolation and separation from society. This makes it a central work in philosophical literature.
