Do we really understand love at all?! Often, we give it countless forms that have nothing to do with its true nature. We imagine that we love our children, our loved ones, our parents… we possess them. Our calculations become confused when they don’t demonstrate the loyalty we expect from them. We resist their freedom through more control and suppression, resulting in people who act badly towards themselves and those around them, without even realizing it. In this novel, we see Khadijah and Sosan—a mother and her daughter—as examples of this flawed concept of love and ownership. Their lives are examples of the most cruel forms of selfishness among humans. Everyone around them paid a price for this, and those who thought they loved them also suffered the consequences. It’s a brilliant narrative with rich characters. The history isn’t forgotten in Rawa Ashur’s writings. The historical events and characters are skillfully woven into the plot of this novel.
