This novel won the World Arabic Fiction Award (Booker Prize) in 2008. It has been published in three editions within just one year. In his new and remarkable novel “Oasis of Sunset,” written at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of British occupation of Egypt, the protagonist, Egyptian police officer Mahmoud Abdul-Zahir, is sent to the Oasis of Siwa to investigate whether he is sympathetic to the revolutionary ideas of Jamal al-Din al-Afghani and Ahmad Arusi. He brings along his Irish wife, Catherine, who is fascinated by history and is eager to find the tomb of Alexander the Great. Together, they embark on a journey into a world of luxury and privacy, forcing them and the people of the oasis to confront their own desires in a time when opportunism, betrayal, love, and heroism are intertwined. The novel also explores the fusion of past and present, objective reality and history. It reflects on the concerns of the nation, as well as the complex relationships between the East and the West, both at a human and cultural level, including the struggles and harmonies that arise from these relationships.
