And thus ends what “Shammon ben Zakhari” wrote. He was also known as Shammon the Egyptian. This book describes the events of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai, from their arrival there until the death of Moses ben Amran. I know that what I have written in this book is nothing more than what I have seen with my own eyes, or what I have heard from trustworthy men. I swear before the Lord that I have not sought any glory or honor for this book. It is simply a way for me to testify about the people of Israel, who were chosen by God and helped by miracles from their enemies. But then God became angry with them and destroyed them in that desolate wilderness, after they endured great hardships and suffering. This is a book whose reader I do not know. I hope that whoever reads this book will remember the author with compassion and pray for forgiveness. Shammon ben Zakhari ben Raubin, also known as Shammon the Egyptian, wrote this book on the last night of the eighth month, in the year 60 after the Exodus.
