People understand religion as a collection of rules and regulations, punishments, boundaries between what is allowed and what is forbidden. All of these are matters of the world. But religion is something much deeper, more comprehensive, and more profound. In its true nature, religion is the ancient love from which we came into this world, and it is the constant longing in our hearts for that original homeland from which we came, and for that source of spiritual nourishment from which we originated. It is a longing that is lost in the trivialities of this world, its concerns, and its desires. We only allow ourselves to be filled with this longing for a moment, when ugliness, injustice, chaos, and disorder prevail in this world. Then we feel like strangers to it, like we don’t belong to it at all, but rather mere visitors and travelers along the way. In that moment, we long for that original homeland from which we came, and we raise our heads in longing towards the sky. We whisper to God: “Where are you?”
