The novelist Khairi Shalbie presents his novel “The Golden Chariot,” which is inspired by a story his mother told him whenever he asked her why they were poor, even though they came from a noble lineage, while others were wealthy despite coming from humble origins. This story, or legend, always captivated his imagination as a child, and continued to do so even as an adult. The plot of the novel takes place in the town of Bani Salem in the mid-1970s. Every night, the people of the town wait for the Golden Chariot to arrive, carrying gold and vast wealth. It is up to the chosen one among them to decide who will be enriched by this unexpected fortune. However, later on, it becomes clear that the Golden Chariot also brings with it the head of a dead man, who whispers in pain. Those who accept the wealth must also accept the head of this dead man, which they bury in their own homes. Between the desire for wealth and the difficulty of accepting it, the calculations become complicated, and opinions vary among the characters in the novel. These characters serve as witnesses to this era.
